8 ways to affordably add style & class to your garden

You don't need a huge budget, a country estate or a full-time gardener to have the best garden in the neighbourhood.

The secret isn't necessarily spending more. It's designing better.

Good proportions, thoughtful planting, beautiful materials and a few clever details can make an ordinary garden feel instantly more considered.

Here are eight of my favourite garden design tricks:

1. Keep your colour palette simple

You don't need every colour in the garden centre.

Choose a handful of colours and repeat them throughout your planting, furniture and accessories.

Think dusty pinks and soft greens, deep burgundy with lime, or silvery foliage with pops of Mediterranean colour.

A limited palette makes everything feel more cohesive — and more expensive.

2. Repeat your plants

Rather than buying one of everything, choose a few favourites and repeat them.

A drift of grasses. Several clumps of verbena. The same shrub appearing in different borders.

Repetition creates rhythm and makes your planting feel intentional rather than like you've been let loose in the garden centre with a trolley.

You can even do this slowly (and for free) over the years by taking cuttings of established plants within your garden!

3. Choose fewer, better materials

You don't need multiple variations of expensive paving. You need materials that work together.

Try using the same stone for paving and steps, or repeating one type of gravel throughout the garden.

Too many competing materials can make a space feel busy. Good garden design is often about editing.

4. Create a focal point

Give the eye somewhere to land.

It could be a beautiful tree, sculpture, water feature, architectural plant or even a view beyond the garden.

It doesn't need to cost a fortune. It just needs to feel intentional.

5. Make your furniture part of the design

Outdoor furniture shouldn't feel like something you've temporarily parked on the patio.

Think about scale, colour, materials and positioning.

Create a proper dining area, a cosy seating spot or a built-in bench.

And add cushions. Ofc.

6. Get the lighting right

Good garden lighting can completely transform a space after dark.

Highlight a tree, wash light across a wall or gently illuminate a seating area.

Warm, subtle lighting creates atmosphere and makes the garden feel like somewhere you actually want to spend the evening.

If you get enough sun in your garden, there are even plenty of beautiful wall solar lights that offer elegance without the need to wire anything in.

7. Hide the ugly stuff

Bins. Composters. Sheds.

They're useful, but nobody needs to see them. Screen them with planting or detract attention away from those areas by drawing the eye to more striking parts of the garden.

A garden instantly feels more polished when the functional bits aren't the first things you notice.

8. Don't fill every inch

This might be the most important one.

Leave some space.

Negative space gives your eye somewhere to rest and allows the beautiful things to stand out.

A simple lawn surrounded by generous planting can feel far more luxurious than a garden packed with pots, ornaments and plants.

Think of your garden like a room — you wouldn't fill your sitting room from floor to ceiling with furniture.

So, what's the secret?

Making a garden feel stylish doesn't need to cost a fortune.

It's about proportion, repetition, restraint and detail.

At Studioisa, we love gardens with personality — bold planting, strong structure, beautiful materials and spaces designed around real life.

Because the best garden isn't necessarily the most expensive one.

It's the one that makes you think Yep. This feels like us.
